The 2025 Genetic Counseling Internship Program

SIX WEEKS LONG - FULL TIME - PAID INTERNSHIP

The Alliance for Genetic Counseling Fellowship supports a six-week-long, paid summer internship program to provide undergraduate students (rising juniors and seniors) opportunities to gain exposure to the genetic counseling profession at one of the five participating genetic counseling master's programs.

Internship Highlights

Join us for a full-time, paid summer internship, offering hands-on experience in the field of genetic counseling. 

  • Dates for summer 2025: Monday, June 16 – Friday, July 25 

  • Compensation: $17/hour for 40 hours per week (totaling $4,080 for six weeks) 

  • Location: Multiple clinical settings at participating programs  

Gain hands-on experience in genetic counseling

Through clinical shadowing, professional development, research projects, and networking with experts and peers. 

  • Shadow professionals in various clinical settings 

  • Gain exposure to a wide range of clinical genetics specialties 

  • Attend seminars, conferences, and case conferences 

  • Engage in research and laboratory work 

  • Enjoy one-on-one interactions with genetic counselors and current students 

  • Network with fellow genetic counseling interns across the five AGCF schools

Applicant Requirements

Eligible applicants are rising juniors or seniors with a strong interest in genetics, a minimum 3.0 GPA, relevant coursework, background clearance, and access to housing near their program. 

  • Undergraduate students (rising juniors or seniors) 
  • Strong interest in health professions and genetics 
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 with completed coursework in biology, chemistry, and genetics 
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check and provide required immunization records, including COVID-19 
  • Access to housing in the city where the program is based 

Sample Internship Schedule

Here is an example schedule of the structured, six-week program featuring orientation, lab experience, clinical shadowing, mentorship, and a final project presentation, all intended to fully immerse interns in genetic counseling.

Week 1 

  • Orientation and genetics seminars 
  • Introduction to your project 
  • Meeting with assigned mentors 

Week 2 

  • Hands-on experience in a genetics lab 
  • Professional development workshops 
  • Case conferences and dedicated project time 

Week 3 

  • Introduction to research in genetic counseling 
  • Mentor meetings and project work 

Week 4 

  • Shadowing with genetic counselors (2–3 days) 
  • Attend case conferences 
  • Meet with genetic counseling graduate students 

Week 5 

  • Continued shadowing with genetic counselors (2–3 days) 
  • Project work and case presentations 

Week 6 

  • Final project presentation 
  • Book club discussion and mentor reception
